Once again, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself immersed in a mystery that tests her skills and wit to the limit! A rare morning of leisure finds Phryne dropping her daughters off at the Blind Institute for a charity event before paying a visit to a university professor she had met during a previous case. The professor, smitten with Phryne, invites her to dine at his home in Williamstown later in the week. But the evening takes a dark turn when Phryne discovers an opium pipe in the park and a dead Chinese man on the beach, later ruled a homicide. As if that wasn't enough, Lin Chung's teenage sister-in-law goes missing, and a colleague of the professor's is murdered at a Chinese-themed party. Phryne begins to suspect that these events are all connected, especially when she receives alarming notes warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH."
In addition to Phryne's own investigation, her three wards are busy solving their own mysteries. Ruth and Jane are tracking an embezzler at the Institute, while Tinker helps Phryne uncover the identity of the person behind the threatening notes. As always, the formidable and fashionable Phryne is at the center of the action, employing her keen intellect and resourcefulness to get to the bottom of the case.
